Dental Emergencies: What Counts, and What to Do First

Call us the same day for severe or worsening toothache, facial or gum swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown or filling that is sharp or sensitive, bleeding that will not stop after an extraction, or an injury to a tooth after a fall or a sports collision. Swelling in particular should never be left over a weekend – infection that spreads into the tissues of the face or neck is the one dental problem that becomes genuinely dangerous, and it is treated far more easily on day one than on day four.

A few things are worth knowing before you reach us. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, the next thirty minutes decide the outcome: hold it by the crown and not the root, and if you can, push it straight back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk – not water, and not a tissue – and get to us immediately. For a chipped tooth, keep any fragment. For a lost crown, keep it and do not use household glue. For toothache, ordinary over-the-counter pain relief taken on schedule is more effective than waiting for the pain to peak, and heat on the face is a bad idea if there is any swelling. The first is range. If one practice can handle a toddler’s first visit, a teenager’s aligners, an adult’s crown and a grandparent’s denture, you are not managing referrals and separate records across three offices. The second is scheduling: can they see all of you in one trip, and can they see you at a time that does not cost you a day’s work? The third is how they handle money – whether you get written estimates before treatment rather than an invoice afterwards, and whether they will tell you when something can safely be left alone. The fourth is what happens when something goes wrong at an inconvenient time, because sooner or later it will.
