We live in a society that dictates having straight, pearly white teeth as the norm and various statistics reveal that we place a very high value on our smiles. Teeth Whitening is required for our best smile. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that the demand for dental procedures which significantly improves the appearance of one’s dentition has increased exponentially over the past few years.
One of the most commonly performed aesthetic dental treatments for cosmetic enhancement of one’s teeth is Teeth Whitening; the process of artificially lightening the color of teeth.
Generally, the terms teeth whitening and bleaching are more often than not, used interchangeably, however, in terms of technicality, they are very different. According to the American Dental Association, whitening refers to the restoring the natural color of a tooth surface by removing dirt, debris, and stains. Bleaching, on the other hand, is the process of whitening the teeth beyond their natural color and is applied strictly to the products that contain bleaching elements such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.
Here at Dentist at Oakville, we use the three main types of teeth whitening or bleaching procedures, routinely used nowadays.
The cheapest form of teeth whitening is accomplished by the use of various whitening products made available to the public which requires no dental prescriptions. Toothpaste, whitening gels, whitening mouthwash rinses, strips, and pre-made teeth whitening trays are some of the most popular do-it-yourself whitening methods.
A much better alternative to cheap over-the-counter whitening products is the dentist prescribed home-whitening kits. The professionally dispensed kits offer a much more dramatic result than the mouthwashes and gels and are at the same time, still quite affordable. The take-home kits incorporate easy-to-use low-concentration peroxide gels that are applied on custom-made whitening trays which resembles mouth guards and are worn for few hours a day. This method takes precedence over the cheaper alternatives because the procedure poses little to no lasting risks.
For the brightest results, teeth whitening done by a trained professional has the greatest results. With in-office whitening procedures, patients can see the most significant amount of color change in the shortest period of time. This process involves the carefully controlled use of relatively high concentration levels of bleaching components, applied to the teeth meticulously and carefully to provide maximum protection of the gums.
Although teeth whitening is a low-risk procedure and is continually performed at home, it is a form of cosmetic dentistry which should only be performed by or under the strict supervision of a dentist. The dental procedures, in our clinic, are performed to prevent over-heating of the pulp during the procedure, in order to protect pulp disintegration and avoid post-treatment pain. The professionally performed or supervised whitening systems are far safer for your enamel, and while they may cost more than their cheaper counterparts, professional treatment is most certainly a worthwhile investment.
At Dentist at Oakville we strive to provide the highest quality care to our patients. Our dentists pay utmost attention to detail to ensure that the procedures used in our patient’s treatments are completely safe.

Whitening is highly effective on the yellow and brown discolouration that builds up from coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and simple ageing. It is less predictable on grey tones, on the banding left by tetracycline antibiotics taken in childhood, and on white or brown fluorosis spots, which sometimes respond better to bonding or veneers.
Two things whitening gel cannot change are existing fillings and crowns. Composite fillings, porcelain crowns and veneers keep the shade they were made in, so if you have restorations on your front teeth we plan for that: whiten first, then replace or refinish the restorations to match the new shade. Doing it the other way round leaves a visible mismatch. If a front tooth has darkened after trauma or a root canal, external whitening will not lift it, but internal whitening of that single tooth often will.
We also check for decay and gum inflammation before starting. Peroxide applied over an open cavity or inflamed gum margins is uncomfortable and can aggravate the problem, so any active issues are treated first, which sometimes means a hygiene appointment or a course of gum treatment. A professional clean alone often lifts surface staining enough that patients are surprised how much brighter their teeth already look.
Drugstore strips and whitening toothpastes are not a scam, but they are limited. Strips carry a low peroxide concentration and, more importantly, they are a single shape trying to fit every mouth. Gel that does not stay in contact with the tooth surface does not whiten it, which is why strip users often end up with brighter front teeth and darker canines at the corners of the smile. Whitening toothpastes are mostly abrasive polishes: they remove surface film but do not change the underlying colour, and the more abrasive ones can wear enamel over years of use.
A professional approach differs in three ways. The trays are made from an impression of your own teeth, so the gel is held against every surface evenly and kept off the gums. The concentration is chosen for your sensitivity and your target shade rather than being set by retail safety limits. And a dentist checks first that whitening is actually the right treatment for the discolouration you have, which is the step that saves people money.
In-office whitening is typically a single appointment of about ninety minutes, with the gum tissue isolated and protected while the gel is applied in several cycles. Most patients see several shades of change the same day. Take-home whitening with custom trays is worn for a set period each day over roughly ten to fourteen days and produces a comparable result more gradually. Many patients combine them, starting in the chair and maintaining at home.
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect and it is normal rather than a sign of damage. Peroxide opens the microscopic tubules in the tooth briefly, which is what makes cold air or cold drinks feel sharp for a day or two. It settles on its own. We reduce it by choosing a lower concentration for shorter periods when you already have sensitive teeth, by recommending a desensitising toothpaste for a fortnight before you begin, and by spacing out sessions instead of pushing through. Tell us if you get sensitivity between visits rather than stopping altogether, because in almost every case the protocol can simply be adjusted.
For the first forty-eight hours the teeth are more absorbent than usual, so it is worth avoiding coffee, tea, red wine, cola, curry, tomato sauce, soy sauce, beetroot and berries during that window. After that, normal habits are fine, but a few small changes extend the result considerably: rinse with water after staining drinks, use a straw for iced coffee, and keep up regular hygiene visits.
Realistically, results last somewhere between six months and two years depending on your diet and whether you smoke. Because we make custom trays, topping up is inexpensive: a single night or two of gel once or twice a year usually restores the shade without repeating the full course. We keep your trays on record so replacements are straightforward.
We quote whitening in writing before you start and there are no surprises added later. Whitening is a cosmetic procedure, so Ontario dental plans generally do not cover it, although the examination and any hygiene appointment beforehand often are covered. If you are enrolled in the federal programme, our Canadian Dental Care Plan page explains what is and is not included. We are happy to talk through the difference in cost between in-office, take-home and combined approaches so you can choose on value rather than guesswork.
You will find us at 370 Sixteen Mile Drive, Oakville, ON L6M 0Z3, on the ground floor with free parking at the door. Patients visit from Glenorchy, Bronte Creek, Palermo, Uptown Core, River Oaks and Joshua Creek. Our hours are Monday and Wednesday 10:00 to 19:00, Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 to 16:00, and Friday 10:00 to 17:00, and the later Monday and Wednesday finishes make it possible to fit a ninety-minute in-office session in after work. Call (289) 837-2222 or use our appointment request form.
Most patients move several shades on a standard shade guide. We assess your starting shade and the type of discolouration at the consultation and tell you what is realistically achievable, because the honest ceiling varies from person to person.
Professionally supervised whitening at appropriate concentrations does not damage enamel. The risks come from unsupervised high-strength gels, ill-fitting trays that leak onto the gums, and abrasive home remedies. Charcoal pastes and baking soda scrubs are the ones we see causing genuine enamel wear.
We recommend waiting. There is no evidence of harm, but whitening is entirely elective and there is no reason to take an unnecessary step during pregnancy. A hygiene visit to remove surface stain is a good interim option.
We generally wait until the permanent teeth are fully in and the enamel has matured, which is usually the mid to late teens. For younger patients, see our children’s dentistry page.
With fixed braces we wait until they come off, so the whole surface whitens evenly. With Invisalign the aligners are removable, so whitening can often be done towards the end of treatment.
Allow at least two weeks. That leaves time for any sensitivity to settle and for a top-up if you want to go a shade further.
